The Motherhood Penalty

Research project

The Motherhood Penalty

Our first research project is The Motherhood Penalty research project, which we were asked to partner on with PiPA and Keira Malik and which was inspired by our 5 year Women in Theatre research project.

This project is primarily focused on theatre at present then we have suggested expansion to other forms in order to reflect the focus of the taskforce Arts Council England has agreed to launch as a result of our research and as research shows it is important to look at and address the reasons for under-representation across the arts as well as in individual art forms. An example of this is the finding that over 70% of students on UK creative arts courses are female but only around 30% or less of roles across the arts are occupied by women, which our CEO completed the world first major mixed methods research project on at Cambridge University.

This project takes place alongside our other work with our contributing organisations including the BFI, Channel 4, Screen Yorkshire, Film London, various theatres and others.
